Jonn Hawley (Milwaukee, WI)

Guest Interview with Jonn Hawley

Jonn Hawley (Milwaukee, WI)

Jonn Hawley (Milwaukee, WI)

JM: So Jonn, let me get all the generics out of the way first. Tell me where you are from, how long you have been a DJ, how long you have been a producer, and what your greatest influences have been.

JH: Well, I am from Milwaukee aka. Brew City. I have been a DJ since 1991 and started producing my own music in 2000. As a DJ I was influenced by the sounds of my brother DJ Michael J and others such as Derrick Carter, Green Velvet and Derrick May. In the production world I have been influenced across the board from almost every genre of music.

JM: We spoke over some good grub at Hell’s Kitchen while you were here and talked about production. Can you fill people in on how you got into producing house music and a little bit about the growing pains of going from gear (hardware) to software production?

JH: I got into producing when a good friend from my break dancing days came back from living in Los Angeles and approached me about it. I was hooked instantly! After that I decided to get all the gear I needed to be able to produce music. Going from hardware to software was like a God send for me. Running all that stuff thru Midi was a nightmare!

JM: How did Minneapolis treat you? Did you enjoy playing in the Record Room of First Avenue?

JH: Minneapolis was AWESOME both times I have played the Record Room. The vibe is so thick you could probably cut it with a knife! :)

JM: I was recently asked this and want to ask you a similar question. How do you feel about the notion that House Music is going away in the dance music world?

JH: House music will never die. It may go underground from time to time like it has recently but you best believe it’s still gonna be there!

JM: Tell us about the stuff you are doing as a DJ. You are a resident at Taylors in Milwaukee. How is that going? Do you have any big gigs coming up that you are particularly excited about?

JH: Taylors is a more chill spot here in Milwaukee so I get to play everything from downtempo, funk, disco & house. Needless to say I love it! I’ve also been blessed to have been traveling to many different spots to DJ over the years. Recent destinations have been your hometown Minneapolis also Ireland, Miami, Nashville, Los Angeles, Baltimore & San Francisco. The holidays are approaching so I usually try to have some time off playing during these months but the next spots to rock before that happens is Chicago and St. Louis.

JM: I have heard about some big stuff coming up for you. Can you fill us in on all the new projects and releases that you have coming up?

JH: Recently I had my Soul Dweller EP come out on Large Music and a track called Electric Lush come out on Poontin Music along with a few remixes on Lingo Recordings and Native Soul Recordings. Coming up next is a remix I did for Motor City Soul on Large Music. I am also in the process of finishing four solo ep’s for Large, Amenti, Lingo & Soul Fuel.
